Plot Summary

Pixels is a science fiction comedy film that takes place in the present day but pays homage to classic video games from the 1980s. The story focuses on a group of former arcade champions who are called upon by the President of the United States to help defend the planet against an alien invasion.

The aliens, who have mistakenly interpreted video footage of classic arcade games as a declaration of war, begin attacking Earth using technology inspired by 1980s games such as Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Arkanoid, Galaga, Centipede, and Donkey Kong. To counter the invasion, the United States hires former arcade champions to lead the planet's defense, training Navy SEALs to play the games and developing rayguns that are effective against the aliens.

As the battle between the humans and aliens intensifies, the former arcade champions must use their skills to outsmart the aliens and save the planet. Along the way, they face various challenges, including battling a giant Pac-Man and confronting the leader of the alien invasion, who takes the form of Donkey Kong. The movie is filled with action-packed scenes, hilarious dialogue, and plenty of nostalgia for anyone who grew up playing classic arcade games.

The Making of Pixels

Pixels is a 2015 science fiction comedy film directed by Chris Columbus, written by Tim Herlihy and Timothy Dowling, and produced by Columbus, Adam Sandler, Allen Covert, and Mark Radcliffe. The film is based on the 2010 short film of the same name by Patrick Jean and stars Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, Peter Dinklage, Josh Gad, and Brian Cox.

One of the most interesting aspects of the movie is its use of classic video game characters and visual effects to create an alien invasion. The film's visual effects team used motion capture technology to bring the video game characters to life, and worked closely with the filmmakers to make sure that the characters looked and moved in a way that was true to their original form.

Despite its impressive visual effects, the film received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. Some praised the film's nostalgic appeal and action-packed scenes, while others criticized its formulaic plot and weak character development. Nevertheless, the film was a commercial success, grossing $244 million worldwide against a production budget of between $88 million and $129 million.

While Pixels may not have been a critical darling, it remains a fun and entertaining tribute to classic video games that will delight fans of the genre.

Cast

Directed by Chris Columbus and written by Tim Herlihy and Timothy Dowling, Pixels features an all-star cast of talented actors.

The main cast includes:

  • Adam Sandler as Sam Brenner, a former arcade champion turned electronics installer who is called upon to help defend the planet against an alien invasion. Sandler is also known for his roles in Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, and The Wedding Singer.
  • Kevin James as President Will Cooper, a childhood friend of Sam Brenner who becomes the unpopular President of the United States. James is also known for his roles in King of Queens, Hitch, and Paul Blart: Mall Cop.
  • Michelle Monaghan as Lieutenant Colonel Violet van Patten, a U.S. Army officer who assists in the fight against the aliens. Monaghan is also known for her roles in True Detective, Gone Baby Gone, and Mission: Impossible III.
  • Peter Dinklage as Eddie Plant, a former arcade champion and Sam Brenner's rival who becomes involved in the fight against the aliens. Dinklage is also known for his role as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones.
  • Josh Gad as Ludlow Lamonsoff, a former arcade champion who becomes involved in the fight against the aliens. Gad is also known for his roles in Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, and The Book of Mormon.

With such a talented cast and crew, it's no wonder that Pixels was able to capture the hearts of audiences around the world.
